Progress Report

State Parks is taking a fresh look at the notice of preparation (NOP) for the EIR for a horse camp in the park. The new NOP should, we hope, more accurately reflect the actual conditions and options.

The idea of a new horse camp in Descanso was floated recently at a Descanso Planning Group meeting. The proposed camp would be across from McClintock’s, in the meadow near the Merigan Trailhead. The proposal does not preclude additional camps in other areas of the park.

Work to finish the staging area at Hual-Cu-Cush has been pushed back a few weeks, to the end of March. Remember, always clean up after your horses at any staging area. Bring a muck tub and haul it home with you.

Upcoming Events

No horse? Horseless horsepeople are welcome at all events. We can tell stories, sing songs, and keep an eye on the camp. Some rides will need helpers to keep an eye on the horses, and to shuttle riders back to get their rigs. There’s plenty of fun to be had.

More on the series of three rides and campouts for the 150th anniversary of the Overland Mail.

Done: Terry Hamilton of Ramona Trails Association (RTA) gave a report on the first of the three historic rides, from Palm Spring Oasis to Vallecito, The campout/ride was a great success. The food was great, the weather cooperated with a break in the wind for the ride on Saturday. There were presentations of historic information, and many people rode in period clothing.

Coming up next: May 5, 2007 - Mason Valley to Los Vaqueros ride, with camping at Los Vaqueros May 4-6. This is a challenging uphill ride for fit trail horses, organized by the Ramona Trails Association. Contact Terry Hamilton,, (760) 789-5185.

June 16, 2007 – The “Jackass Mail Ride” – Sunrise Staging Area to Merigan Ranch, with camping at Merigan Ranch. This is a CRSPIA ride, along with the Cuyamaca MAU, supported by CEA. See for details. Volunteers are needed! Most volunteer assignments are before/after the ride, leaving you free to go enjoy the ride.

Also coming up, the CEA Gathering Labor Day Weekend ride, Friday, August 31 – Sunday, September 3, 2007, at the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation, about 7 miles east of Warner’s Ranch. Camping will be only $15/night per rig, for up to four horses. [NOTE, AS OF 6/23/2007 DUE TO FEEDBACK FROM MEMBER CLUBS ABOUT FAIRNESS AND AFFORDABILITY WE ARE REVISITING PRICING AND MEALS. PLEASE DO NOT PUBLISH THIS OUTDATED PRICING.] This event needs sponsoring clubs, and volunteers for a variety of jobs. Contact Peggy Martin,
